Hail in Hilo is exceptionally rare, typically occurring only when deep atmospheric instability allows thunderstorm updrafts to reach freezing levels high above the tropical Pacific. One of the most notable Hawaiian hail events occurred in March 2012, when a severe thunderstorm dropped record-setting hailstones up to 4.25 inches in diameter over Oahu, demonstrating that severe hail is possible in the state. Locally, Hilo's severe weather is more often characterized by torrential rainfall and damaging winds.
